The Cord
Interfacing
All Infrastructure within the Prime Nexus was outfitted with interfacing equipment; however, only the Mother Tree and Observation Centre had the technology to implant interfacing equipment. It was deemed critical that these facilities had the equipment as part of the Genesis Project so that select members of future generations of the new species could monitor the terraforming technology and access the information stored in the Genesis archives.
Interfacing Technology
Interfacing Technology is implanted at the base of the skull, just above the nape of the neck. It has two circles, one that serves as a plug/port and the other that serves as a jack. The cord from the jack can reach up to five feet, allowing the user to pull it out as necessary and plug it into nearby outlets. Plugging your own jack into your plug is ill-advised as it creates a feedback loop that can cause the user to pass out for extended periods of time or even fry the user's brain. Jacks can be plugged into other humanoid ports in order to transfer data between individuals.
As stated previously, Mother Trees and the Observation Centre have the ability to implant this technology safely. It is a (mostly) painless procedure that leaves the individual able to access infrastructure technology.
Data Vials
Data Vials are small, cylindrical, portable containers that store a massive amount of data (up to 3 terabytes). These vials can be plugged into ports by extending the jack at the end. It is not wise to leave a data vial plugged in for extended periods of time as it can be snapped if impacted hard enough, leaving the jack in the user's port.
Data Drive
A larger version of a Data Vial is a Data Drive. They store up to 33 terabytes of information and are circular disks which extend a jack from their sides. These disks are typically thicker (about an inch) and have an access port in addition to a jack.
Data Core
The largest version of data stored Data core. These hexagonal/spherical cores are 3-4 inches in diameter, fitting in most humanoid hands. They have jacks that extend from their casing with a wire, much like Interfacing Technology, and can be plugged into ports. They also have an access port. Data cores store up to 333 terabytes of information.
